Sit On Top Kayak Safety and Rescue

  • This award has been designed to create a level of competence in Sit on Top Kayaking (SOT) rescue and safety
  • This award is a prerequisite for a WSA SOT Instructor
  • Bi-Annual Renewal required for SOT Safety and Rescue
  • 2-day First Aid (minimum)

 

This highlights the key learning objectives for candidates attending the named course. A candidate must show evidence throughout the course that they understand and can put into practice the stated objectives. Candidates will be assessed via practical demonstrations and/or exams/assessments.

Objectives:

  • Should be able to understand the remit of the WSA SOT Water Safety and Rescue award.
  • Should have a sound understanding of the risks involved with Sit on Top Kayak (SOT) and how these can be best managed.
  • Understand the WSA’s recommendation for the wearing of PFD’s.
  • Have knowledge of and explain what safety equipment is available to the instructor.
  • Be able to explain what impact the weather and environmental factors have on the planning of SOT lessons/activities.
  • Be aware of the communication equipment available and how to communicate with the emergency services effectively stating the 3P’s (Position, People, Problem).
  • Understand the array of instructor signals and how they should be implemented.
  • Understand the considerations made when performing a dynamic risk assessment.
  • Understand the legal requirements when reporting an incident/rescue. 

Rescue Objectives:

  • To understand the S.T.V.E principle of rescue response.
  • Understand the drowning process and the 3 distinct stages of drowning.
  • Be able to demonstrate the ability to release a casualty when rescuing with no equipment. (Front release/Rear release).
  • Be able to demonstrate an extended arm tow and cross-chest tow.
  • Be able to demonstrate the correct protocol towing procedures.
  • Understand the different way in which clients can be towed. (Quick tow, long tow, multiple tow).
  • Demonstrate the ability to rescue a conscious client using an instructor’s kayak.
  • Be able to ask all 5 critical post rescue care questions to a conscious casualty.
  • Demonstrate the correct protocol for rescuing an unconscious casualty face down in the water. (This should involve correct rolling technique and casualty handling.)
  • Demonstrate how to land an unconscious casualty.
  • Be able to perform a two man carry/drag on an unconscious casualty.
