Night before checked weather and avalanche forecasts - decided as the forecast was so good we would go for Ben Macdui. Checking the route we knew we had to be careful past around Miadan Creag an Lerth-thoin.

With two novice members gave them advice and tutorial on use of crampons, kicking steps and safe travel over snow.

On reaching Ben Macdui decided to head towards Sneachda and come down via 1141 rather than walk out on the same route.

Skills practiced - use of crampons and ice axe, planned route, looked after group of 5, gave instruction on technical skills when travelling on snow. Identification of grouse and ptarmigan.

Area : The Cairngorms

The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
