The mountains began calling me from my home near the South Downs in Sussex. In the early 1980's where I found a lot of adventure and personal development in Snowdonia and Scotland, as well as the Pyrenees, Alps and other areas.
In the late 1990's I qualified as a Yachtmaster, and whilst this was my job, the Mountains were always where I wanted to spend my time off, and increasingly interested in two day Mountain Marathons for their navigational challenges. In 1999 I moved to Dolgellau, Snowdonia and have extensively explored the area on foot, bike and boat, working for Canoe Wales at the National White Water Centre from 2005-2014.
In 2012 I was recognised by the Royal Institute of Navigation for my professional achievements, and continue to maintain a Fellowship with them.
In 2014 I ran Marathon des Sables, a 250km self supported foot race across the Sahara, something I would repeat given the opportunity!
Through no-mad (www.no-mad.org) , we offer guiding and courses as well as a range of other services for outdoor people.
Journeying has always been my thing, on foot, on a bike, in a boat and in the air (un-powered), anything really, though I've a healthy respect for horses!
Alongside no-mad, I am an associate Consultant in the Water and Leisure department for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, Health and Safety Advisor to UK Athletics and run Mentrau Bach Ltd. I have been a contributing author to a number of guidebooks (Cycling and Swimming, as well as mapping). I volunteer as the founding Event Director at Dolgellau parkrun, am a member of the South Snowdonia Local Access Forum and co-ordinate the Keep Wales Tidy litter picking hub in Dolgellau too.
