I have since worked for small outdoor centres in the UK and abroad and built up a solid apprenticeship of instructing and personal skills. In 2009, I got a job role as Operations Manager for John Dunne at Harrogate Climbing Centre, it was a step into management that I really enjoyed. I met great folk like Ian Fenton, and I built a rapport with the clients, getting to know them by name. This felt vitally important and something that had been missing in my other roles, building a regular client base, and having positive social interactions with them. I then moved on to Carnegie Great Outdoors as the Operations Manager. This role provided insight into logistics, large clients, large staff base and many others, and it was the perfect stepping stone. After 3.5 years I had largely become office based and yearned to be outdoors again, so I left to crack on with other ambitions. I spent 2 years in the ambulance service as an EMT. I loved this line of work, once again chatting to and supporting people.
2018 saw me start up a small business, My Expedition Rocks. It has been a complete success, and I have several school clients, run residential programmes, and have a very solid and loyal client base around the Skipton, Yorkshire area. I run most of my own sessions, and therefore get the best of both worlds, instructing and chatting to clients, but also using all my skills. I push my RCI, CWDI and ML to the absolute limit, and I am keen to begin teaching the new MT Rock Skills and MT Hill & Mountain Skills courses in 2022, to continue that journey. Currently working towards the below qualifications:
- Winter Mountain Leader
- Rock Climbing Development Instructor (Trainee)
- International Mountain Leader (Trainee)
