Simon is a passionate and committed rock climber. His travels and adventures have lead him all over the world. Simon regularly delivers Rock Climbing Instructor training and assessment courses from which the candidates are always giving him great feedback. Simon is a highly professional individual with an approachable and relaxed attitude to teaching which allows his clients to perform to their potential.
During the 2020 Winter season I have spent a considerable amount of time with Simon both climbing together and off the hill. He is an enthusiastic and experienced winter climber who has comfortably climbed grade V with me this season. Having worked and climbed with numerous WMCIs and WMCI Trainees over the last decade, I believe he is an appropriate candidate for WMCI registration and I can confirm that he easily meets the requirements in terms of personal climbing standard and depth of experience. Although I have not directly observed his leadership and supervision of Winter walking activities, throughout this season he has displayed a high level of knowledge, diligence, professionalism and reflective practice in the planning and review of all of the activities he has been involved in. I can also confirm that his logbook entries for leadership and supervision of Winter walking activities for 2020 are accurate. Simon should make an excellent WMCI and I wish him every success in gaining the qualification.
I have known Simon for a number of years and accompanied him on several trips into the UK hills and mountains in both summer and winter conditions as well as climbing with him on multi-pitch climbs and winter routes. I have no doubt that he will make an excellent WMCI.
Simon has worked for us on a number of summer and winter activities. In the winter context this has involved delivering several winter skills and winter hillwalking activities. Simon always acts with the upmost professionalism and receives great feedback from clients. His judgements are sound, his timekeeping perfect and I always feel confident in his decision making. He is also diligent about planning and this helps ensure he gets the best from the conditions and offers the best opportunities to clients. I also very much value that he will always go the extra mile to ensure courses run to the highest standard - an example being one of the recent courses he worked on where he was willing to join the clients for an evening avalanche lecture even though this was in his own time. I have no hesitation in supporting Simon on his journey to becoming a WMCI and know he will be an asset to the profession.
I have know Simon for about 14 years. During this time we have been rock climbing and winter climbing (just last recently we went winter climbing in Torridon). Also, we have been winter walking when the climbing conditions were poor. During the time I have known Simon he has been working through outdoor qualifications, WML and MIA. Doing the WMCI for Simon is a natural progression and I would recommend and support him in the process.
