My passion for mountains & expeditions started in 2005, spending over 2 months living deep in the remote jungles of Belize.
In the past 12 years I have organised, guided & summited mountains on over 80+ expeditions all over the world as well as gaining qualifications & working freelance/self-employed across the UK in both Summer & Winter. Living in North Wales I live a non stop life of outdoor instructing/guiding/teaching & expedition guiding work. During the year I enjoy work as an MIA & WML in North Wales & Scotland, & spread throughout the year I lead expeditions to all corners of the world through my company Mountain Expeditions. Whilst I have a deep love for dry rock & esoteric summer adventures, winter conditions are where I truly feel at home, whether in Scotland, the Alps or at extreme high altitudes, & on both foot & ski. Winter climbing & skiing are my main passions & I hope to develop my skills in this area or order to become and MIC and potentially IFMGA over the coming years.
Highlights: In spring 2017 & 2018 I guide on the North and South of Everest respectively, with successful summits for my clients. In 2017 I completed the worlds coldest and hardest ultra race – The Yukon Arctic Ultra. My friend and I became the first team ever to complete the 430 mile race on foot. In 2018 I organised and guided a world record breaking speed round of the famous '7 Summits', smashing the record by 9 days.
I have accumulated vast amounts of high altitude experience but my drive for harder more technical climbs is rapidly growing hence my desire to do the MIC & IFMGA.

I have known Jon for years and have climbed with him on multi-pitch rock routes in the UK over the past two years. His list of achievements speak for themselves. His enthusiasm is matched only by his competency and his passion for the outdoors and the sport of climbing and mountaineering is passed on to those he climbs with. He is well suited to the MIA award and i have no doubt he will become a superb MIA instructor. Dave Talbot

I have known Jon since 2008. We met in Scotland when we were both preparing for Winter ML assessment, since then Jon has built up an impressive list of high altitude ascents both personally and with clients as part of his successful Greater Ranges guiding business. In the last few years we have met around the world; sharing information on possible objectives, sharing ideas and occasionally going climbing. Jon is a really friendly, personable and very experienced leader; I think he will make an excellent Mountaineering Instructor.

I first met Jon while he was doing an Single Pitch Award training course at Plas y Brenin in 2008. At the time he was planning another high altitude mountaineering trip with some friends and it was blatantly obvious this was a passion of his at this time. Since then, it has become very obvious were Jon's skill and experience lie and he has secured and developed numerous personal and professional opportunities to explore the world of high altitude climbing and mountaineering, including an ascent of Mount Everest! Hats go off to Jon for carving his way through this world. Jon is certainly a popular people person and has a great strength in creating a fun and successful environment around him, especially on more remote expeditions. His hunger for travel and exploration is evident through his social media presence, when you speak to him in person, through his article writing and photographs. As Jon works through consolidation of current skills and experience to achieve yet another Mountain Training award, I wish him every success!

Jon is an experienced all round mountaineer. We have climbed together on many occasions; our first outing was climbing on the Ben in winter with a mutual friend Becky Coles who had assured me Jon hadn't been out much recently but was solid and would be happy climbing some classic IVs and Vs with us. Starting somewhat inauspiciously that morning, Jon announced he'd left his harness in the bottom car park and would catch Becky and I as we set off up the North Face track with vague plans to head to the Waterfall Gully area. As we approached the bottom of Waterfall Gully I took a good look at the harder than planned for the day Gemini which I'd had in mind and was in great nick. No sooner than I was up the first pitch than impressively Jon popped round the corner in time to tie in and swing leads with us, raving about the quality of the climb and taking the harder than planned route in his stride. We then headed over to Harrison's Waterfall and bagged another classic, and not much easier than Gemini that day given cruddy ice. Since being introduced we've gone on to climb more together on winter routes and summer rock in North Wales and Jon has always been an enthusiastic, solid and reliable climbing partner. In preparation for his MIA Jon and I spent sometime running through teaching lead climbing and improvised rescue and Jon struck me as hard working and dedicated to the craft of becoming a great Mountaineering Instructor. Jon is very knowledgeable about climbing, mountaineering and instructing and he already operates a very successful expedition company of his own - http://www.mountain-expeditions.co.uk/ Jon has the makings of being a great MIC and I'm sure will be eager to increase his knowledge and experience working through the MIC process so as to share his passion for the mountains with others. Since our first day climbing, Jon has managed to remember his harness on each outing...

I know Jon as a climbing partner, in a work capacity and as a friend. Jon is an exceptional candidate for the MIC scheme, for the following reasons: Experience - Jon has a range of Scottish winter climbing experience across many seasons. This shows through on the hill - whether it be in his organized stances and ropework, fluid climbing style or quick transitions. Motivated to be the best instructor he can be and quick to improve - Jon is highly motivated, and is always keen to get out and get the most from each day, for him and his clients. He picks up concepts quickly, and is always looking for ways to improve - be it a different ropework technique or teaching method, or how to provide the best learning environment for his clients. Leadership qualities - I have been fortunate enough to see Jon at work, both taking clients cragging in the UK and also leading expeditions abroad, such as Elbrus. He has a relaxed, positive attitude that instills confidence in his clients, pushing them on to achieve their goals. He is an enthusiastic teacher and coach - so much so that normally his clients are having so much fun they learn effortlessly. His judgement on the hill is spot on - forged through a breadth of experience - usually helped by the fact he has thoughtfully chosen his venues wisely based on snow and weather conditions. Jon is safe and competent and will make a brilliant MIC - I have no doubt that he will go on to a position of distinction within the industry.
