I was born and raised in Scotland and went on to serve around the world as a Scottish infantry officer, gaining considerable experience of operating in the outdoors over a decade long career. On leaving the military I realised a long held dream to move to the Scottish Highlands (and to grow a beard). I consider myself hugely fortunate to live and work in the Cairngorms National Park, and relish the opportunity to share my knowledge of it.
I am a qualified mountain leader and a full member of the Mountain Training Association, which includes a commitment to continuous professional development and ensures that I am kept informed of the latest developments in industry practice. I also hold the British Cycling Level 2 Mountain Bike Leadership Award and the Canadian Ski Instructors’ Alliance Level 2 Instructor qualification. I am a Leave No Trace trainer and National Navigation Award Scheme tutor, as well as holding outdoor first aid and mental health first aid qualifications, civil liability insurance and an enhanced disclosure and barring service check. I am also a Cairngorms National Park Volunteer Ranger.
Whilst never compromising on safety, I like to take a relaxed approach to time spent in the hills; appreciating the whole experience, rather than rushing to simply bag the summits. I love the simplicity offered by the routine of the mountains, and the space for thought which is generated.
