Paul is an experienced outdoor practitioner who holds higher level awards in both land and water based activities. Paul is also the author of the popular book "Climbing Games" I have been on a coaching course run by Paul and it was both informative and run in the professional manner as would be expected of a MT Course Director. Paul is able to relate to both adults and young people alike as he has experience of both high level adult coaching as well as working in a school. I have no hesitation in recommending Paul as a safe and competent instructor who is easy to get along with and learn from.

Relationship
I have known Paul for nearly a decade. We initially met through kayaking where we have kayaked together across the UK and Europe. I have climbed with Paul on Dartmoor, in Snowdonia and the Peak District. I was impressed by not only his skill as a climber but how he managed to impart some of his vast experience and knowledge to me, without me even feeling I was getting a lesson! Consequently I booked myself onto an SPA training course run by Paul. His experience as an educator and a coach shone throughout the course, with him tailoring the course to each of us, who were at different levels of experience and knowledge. He has a layered and 'teaching while doing' approach, which I fully engaged with and I learnt a great deal in just 1 weekend. Paul is a competent and knowledgeable coach, both in climbing & mountaineering, and kayaking. AS a leader he comes across as clearly in control however I have never seen him stressed, despite having been in some stressful situations with him. I would highly recommend him as a instructor, coach and climbing partner.

Relationship
I have observed Paul working through the CWA and SPA schemes, and as a First Aid provider. Paul's knowledge base is immense and not only that, but he has the ability to differentiate material almost instantly to fulfill the needs of the individual. Paul balances fun and learning simultaneously such that learning outcomes stay imprinted in your memory.

Relationship
I have worked, climbed and walked with Paul on many occasions over the last few years and it is always a pleasure. Paul has long been a super keen climber and mountaineer, gaining a wealth of knowledge on the subjects. He is active in the development of them and regularly gets out on the rock and in the hills in both summer and winter conditions. Paul is definitely capable of making the most of the MIC scheme.

Paul was recently hired to be our International Mountain Leader, and group leader, on a charity challenge we recently completed in which we climbed 5 mountains, in 5 different countries (France, Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria) in 5 days. Having been led by IML's and Alpine Guides in the past; I found Paul to be the most inclusive, educational, friendly and engaging professional of his type that I have experienced to date. He developed fantastic rapport with our team, and ensured that safety was his number one priority. That said, he also did a fantastic job of helping to get everyones head in the right place when struggling either for fitness or motivation. The whole group returned from the challenge, not just having completed it safely - but also having had a great experience, and learned a heck of a lot along the way! During the challenge, Paul imparted much knowledge on to me in relation to Flora & Fauna, safety on the mountain and his experiences of the training and development of would be Mountain Leaders. As I am planning on putting myself through the ML (Summer) training & assessment this year, I found this to be most valuable - added to this the fact that he allowed me to help out assisting him with some of the more vulnerable group members when the opportunity arose gave me a lot of confidence in my ability to take my own experience to the next level. Already looking forward to our next opportunity to train, climb, walk together... couldn't recommend Paul Smith highly enough.
