Award Description

The Hill and Moorland Leader award is designed for people who want to lead groups in the hill and moorland areas of the UK and Ireland. This award is a wonderful opportunity to learn the leadership skills required to feel confident about taking people out walking. As you may have guessed from the descriptive title of this award, it focuses on non-mountainous terrain.

About

Hill and Moorland Leader Training

The scope of this scheme makes it appropriate for Duke of Edinburgh Leaders, Club Leaders, VolunteersAcwaTerra Logo and Outdoor Instructors. It is a  walking qualification, nationally recognised within the outdoor industry and schools, and designed for people who wish to lead groups on day walks in the hills and moorland areas of the UK and Ireland.

Hill and Moorland Leaders lead groups in terrain that, as the name suggests, is in the Hills and Moors of the UK. Generally, this is out of Lowland areas such as farmland and woodlands and is often more remote, but not as mountainous as the operational scope of the Mountain Leader's scheme.

The following prerequisites are to be met prior to enrolling on the Hill and Moorland Leader scheme:

  • You must be at least 18 years old
  • You should have at least a year’s worth of experience of hill and moorland walking
  • You should have an interest in leading groups in the hills
  • You must be a member of a mountaineering council: BMC, Mountaineering Scotland or Mountaineering Ireland (you can join one when you register if you're not already a member) - if you have questions about why Mountain Training require this, click this
    link - find out why

If you can meet the pre-requisites, then:

  • Create an account on the Mountain Training Candidate Management System or log in if you already have one from other awards.
  • Register for the Hill and Moorland Leader scheme, the price is £49.
  • Book your course
