About

WORKSHOP CONTENT & LEARNING OUTCOMES

This CPD workshop has been developed for mountain leaders, hill and moorland leaders and climbing & mountaineering guides, and also for those training for and aspiring to those qualifications and roles. Its content is designed to achieve the following objectives:

  • To provide knowledge and understanding of upland raptors and their behaviour, including breeding and hunting habits
  • Learn fascinating facts and information on raptors including their extraordinary skills and physical characteristics, which will help leaders engage with their groups on the subject
  • To assist in identification of raptor species covered, including differentiating males. females and juveniles
  • Understand where and when we are likely to see individual raptor species covered
  • Provide information on the conservation status of individual species and the work being done to protect them

Workshop Format:

The workshop will be delivered online using Microsoft Teams video, as an interactive session. Participants do not need to have Microsoft Teams accounts or subscriptions as a link will be provided to enable them to join the call from PC, ipad, Mac or mobile device.

The online format enables us to “visit” geographically widespread habitats in a way that would not be possible to achieve during a day in the hills.

Using high resolution photos, videos and images, we take a close look at fascinating birds of prey which inhabit the UK's mountains, hills and moorland.

EQUIPMENT/KIT REQUIRED

PC or other device suitable for joining a video conference call.

Suitable Wifi connection

WORKSHOP PROVIDER CREDENTIALS

I am a qualified Mountain Leader (MLS), registered with the Mountain Training Association. I have hiked and climbed in the UK’s mountains for over 30 years.

I have had a lifelong interest in the natural world. Through years of observation and fieldwork, I have developed in-depth knowledge of UK wildlife and the ecosystems which support it.

My knowledge covers a wide spectrum: Invertebrates, reptiles, birds and mammals. My specialisation is in raptor species (birds of prey).

I have worked year-round for the RSPB since 2018 as both volunteer and employee, in the hills of Northern England. My role entails monitoring and protecting endangered birds of prey including Hen Harrier, Marsh Harrier, Merlin, Peregrine, Short Eared Owl.

Through carrying out surveys and monitoring breeding behaviour, I have contributed to the compilation of a Bird Atlas of Lancashire.

I am licensed by Natural England to carry out conservation work with Schedule 1, protected raptor species.

I also run two other online MTA CPD Workshops: "Wildlife and Habitats of the UK's Mountains and Uplands" and "Conservation and Restoration of the UK's Mountains and Uplands".
