I'm an MIC and British Mountain Guide, working part time for Mountain Training as Technical Officer. I'm President of the UIAA's International Training Panel and regularly help federations set up and develop mountain training programmes, and this is a fast-growing area of work.
I was heavily involved in overseeing the development of the qualifications pathway for coaching climbing in the UK .
I've written various books and produced training videos over the years and am occasionally available for private consultancy and guiding - though I have to be quite selective as I'm already pretty busy!

I first met Steve when I attended a course at Plas y Brenin in 2003. His delivery was technically informative, inspiring and taught the participants how to think critically when choosing equipment and making decisions about it’s use in any given mountain safety situation. We have kept in touch over the past 16 years, occasionally rock climbing together in North Wales, via my work as the South African representative on the UIAA Access and Conservation Commission and latterly during discussions with the IFMGA over South Africa’s interest in becoming a member. Steve has a towering reputation as an IFMGA Guide and MIC, and his authored publication “Hillwalking” is the modern standard text book for aspirant and practising Mountain Leaders alike. Yet he is down to earth, always approachable, inclusive and open minded when it comes to considering mountain safety training from the perspectives of the various UIAA member countries. The UIAA’s recent publication “Alpine Skills: Summer” (available as an app. on-line through magzter.com) is a shining example of this modern international collaborative approach to the promotion of mountain safety. As such he is the perfect ambassador both for the UIAA and the UK and I would not hesitate to recommend Steve as a Mountain Guide, Instructor and Consultant.
