James Orpwood Mountaineering is my own small business which came into being after deciding to pursue my true passion in life - sharing my love of Scotland’s mountains and wild places with others.
I provide guided hill walking (summer and winter), navigation and hill skills courses (in summer) and winter skills courses.
A former fisheries scientist, I have been exploring the Scottish hills for nearly 20 years, having first moved to Scotland to pursue a career in science. My story, from mad keen angler and fisheries scientist - to finding professional and personal fulfilment in the mountains, is told in my debut book, A Quest For Fulfilment, published by Grosvenor House Publishing in October 2020.

I am full member of the Mountain Training Association (MTA).
As well as Scotland, I also love world travel and have trekked and climbed in Morocco, Nepal, Bolivia and Iceland, summiting peaks to 6000m+. Closer to home, I also spend time exploring the mountains of Wales and the Lake District.
From my home in Aviemore, where I live with my wife, I have the Cairngorm Mountains on my doorstep - for us, the result of many years of determined hard work and commitment to achieve our dream, together, having met in Nepal in 2008. From Aviemore, other areas of the Highlands are also within easy reach, so I am ideally-placed to offer you a fantastic range of adventures.
I also enjoy working on a freelance basis for a number of other outdoor activity and adventure travel providers, with a wide range of clients.
