This workshop will cover all ropework and security on steep group relevant for the IML award.

Location: Aviemore – We will meet in Aviemore to set up the day before heading to the venue for the practical element of the day. You will be emailed more details before the start of the course.

This workshop will look at managing clients in steep consequential ground both with and without a rope. We will start with looking at how we observe clients before reaching consequential terrain and how we might coach them to move more effectively. We will then progress onto how we might increase safety both with and without a rope and look at situations when ideal anchors are not available.

Please bring a 30m rope, 2x slings, 3x karabiners, a helmet, packed lunch and beverages and suitable clothing a kit for a hill day.

The workshop will be delivered by Sandy Paterson (IML, WMCI and Development Coach). Sandy has been working in the mountains for many years full time both in the UK and abroad. He works regularly as an IML in the Alps and works on all the qualification courses from Lowland Leader through to Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor, including the IML award. He has developed his teaching and coaching knowledge and experience over the last few years and was one of the first WMCI’s to gain the Development Coach Award. He has delivered a number of coaching workshops for the Mountaineering Associations and Glenmore Lodge. As well as this he also delivers the Training and Assessing Skills Workshops, Teaching and Learning Workshops and Decision Making and Leadership Workshops for Mountain Training Scotland.
