Description

Day one of a three day winter skills of which I was an assistant leader.
Blue bird day!
Pretty standard circular route ascending via Fiacalli a Choire Chais ridge to 1141 and then up onto Cairngorm Summit, Stunning day!
Skills undertaken.... planning in the ski cafe, including weather, kit, Planning using the SAIS and BAA process. introduction to crampons and axes. Human Heuristics etc.
Navigation and introduction to map choice in the winter hills.

Area : The Cairngorms

The Cairngorms are ‘a little piece of the arctic in Scotland’ according to the SMC Munros Guide and the area contains many of the tallest peaks in the East Highlands. Ben Macdui (1309m), Cairn Gorm (1244m) and Braeriach (1296) are probably three of the better known and the whole area is full of steep corries and high plateaux. Access to the mountains is typically from Aviemore or Braemar.
